Niagara Section Queenston Heights (0.0 km) to Woodend Conservation Area (13.7 km) - May 1, 2025
15 Hikers joined us on this cloudy day to begin their trek from kilometer 0.0 of the Bruce Trail. Hikers who have not completed their EtoE were Laura, Peter, Donna, Catherine C., Rhonda, Ivan, Catherine V., Josie (Photographer), Renu, and Faryde.
Other hikers were Frances, Steve (Photographer), Marleen, Annette, and Barbara. Off we went with a quick glimpse of a Fox which was stalking some game, Brock's Monument and a memorial for the indigenous people of the area.
After some Googling I have an explanation as to what this is: "This rusted tripod is in fact a Cold War era radio microwave communications tower. It was built by Fleet Industries in the 1950s under contract from Siemens Electric, and used to calibrate large parabolic dishes ..For several years they Calibrated over 100 dishes here. Some where said to be used for Military purposes." It was said with authority but there are other explanations out there. Onward we went.
The Screaming Tunnel. The Google search suggests "A local legend recounts that the tunnel is haunted by the ghost of a young woman whose clothing had caught fire. She died in the tunnel trying to find the nearest house. All versions of these legends end with the girl's screams filling up the tunnel as she was burning to death." We all made it through.
