Niagara Section - Swayze Falls to Decew House - 12.6 km - May 16, 2024

So forgive the lack of professionalism and wit that Ken brings to our weekly blog but there is only so much an aging engineer/banker can bring to the table.  In any event, I'm giving it a go as a fill-in hike coordinator/blogger for the week.  We were 13  hikers setting off from Swayze Falls to cover the 12.6 km to Decew House climbing a modest 221 meters along the way.

After much milling around including Steve getting last second orders from "she that must be obeyed" all the way from France, we got assembled for our initial photo.

Hikers were Steve R. (photographer), Barbara (thanks for filling in as our sweep.  No lost hikers Sandra so you may have competition), Frances, Rita, Marleen, Ron J., Geoff, Frank, Catherine, Liz, Steve, Annette, and Ron B (photographer).  The weather was cool but promising to warm up as the course of the day progressed.  Most importantly no rain was in the forecast.

Swayze Fall was missing the most important element being water!  Barbara checked for water and wayward hikers in the canyon.

After a few kms, a quick stop for a clothing adjustment.

The Trails were mud free which was unexpected given Short Hills PP's reputation.

As the group climbed up around Terrace Falls, Steve R goes off trail with purpose.

He had spotted a perfect natural shower to cool off under.

Meanwhile up above him, a portion of the group were enjoying the view from above.

Frank behind bars and Rita helping him escape!

The weather got ever warmer through the day but the lush forest kept us cool and entertained for most of the way.

Searching for an Elevensie's spot and shortly thereafter, our Bridge picture which became our Elevensies stop.

After lunch we began the long climb back up to the top of the escarpment but only 3.5 km to go.

We can see our destination on the horizon as we hike along the dam for Moody Lake Reservoir.

We all look relaxed as we wander back to the cars with last minute conversations going on.

Ron helps Geoff show off all the muscles he added on the hike. After our goodbyes we were all back in the cars for the drive home after a very pleasant hiking day.

The End
