Sydenham Section -  Series #2 - September 24-26, 2024.

Day 1: Sydenham Section #1 - Blantyre (0.0 km) to Holland-Sydenham Townline & County Rd. 29 (10.5 km) - Sept. 24, 2024.

Seven of us met for today's hike. Josie (photographer and hiding shyly in the background), Andrea, Muris (photographer), Rita, Grace, Andrew and Doug (HC and photographer).  A short and easy hike, through woods and fields, we met at 10am and did not start hiking until close to 10:30.  Rain was forecast but, miraculously while it rained elsewhere close by, the day stayed dry for us throughout the hike.  Shortly after we set off, we missed a turn and had to backtrack half a kilometre.  I had been leading.  Ouch!

By the time we got here, we were already off-piste!

Colour coordination is our new dress code ...

Abandoned homestead, group photo with nobody paying attention, photo of a bridge sign but no bridge-photo, navigating a slippery boardwalk ...

Poignant relic ... whatever happened to the back wheels?

There must have been a storm-burst here to bring down all these branches ...

We came across some very handsome bulls, three of them in the same field.  None of us knew the breed.  Does anyone know?

On we go ...

At Casero's for dinner.  Andrew had gone home to Collingwood.

End of Day 1
--------------

Day 2: Sydenham Section #4 - St. Vincent - Sydenham Townline (41.7 km) to Sideroad 22 & 2nd Concession North (58.4 km) - Sept. 26, 2024.

There were only six of us today. Grace injured her knee yesterday and skived-off today!  The day was overcast but again, rain held off.  In fact, during the hike the sun came out.

From left to right, Andrew (photographer), Muris, Josie (photographer), Rita, Andrea. and Doug (HC and photographer).

Off we go, skies threatening ...

This hike was nominally 16.7 kilometres but through inattention while chatting (notwithstanding having done the same thing yesterday) we managed to miss a turn and had to backtrack about 2 kilometres. Zut!!  But see how happy we were to finish the bit we had missed:

Beyond this point, we were in the Bayview Escarpment Nature Preserve.  Some spectacular views, but very slippery escarpment underfoot for several kilometres.  Consequence: not many photos ...

Out of the Bayview Preserve, and on the road. Kilometres of road ...

End of Day 2
-----------------

Day 3: Sydenham Section #5 - Sideroad 22 & 2nd Concession North (58.4 km) to Bothwell's Corner (72.5 km) - Sept. 25, 2024.

There were six of us again today.  Grace's knee still bothering her.  From left to right, Andrew (photographer and dressed as a boy-scout today, yesterday he was forest-ranger chic), Andrea, Muris (photographer), Rita, Josie (photographer) and Doug (HC and photographer).  A gorgeous day, perfect for hiking a modest 14.2 kilometres.

On we go, on the road to start with ...

We leave the road, walking between fields up to woods.  Dew on gossamer (webs woven by millions of freshly hatched spiders) creates a wonderful autumn sight:

Josie took this picture.  Where was Andrew?

Back on the road, we pass this splendid llama, majestic among sheep ...

We dive into the Sydenham Forest East, a really lovely piece of escarpment-walking.

Last leg.  Out of the Sydenham Forest East onto the Sideroad 22 allowance.  Some road-allowance!  No wonder it was never used.

Through marsh and cathedral-like forest ...

The Polish Soldier tree ...

And then we were out, collecting our cars in Clearview Crescent.

End of Day 3
