On a beautiful day in June,
My good friends gave to me,
A hike from Appleby Line,
To the Pear Tree...
Hiking With Friends was local this week before heading up north next week for the last of our 3 day spring series trips...our "true love" of the Bruce Trail continues...
What we didn't love so much was the closed gate at the Hilton Falls Conservation Area parking lot when we arrived...the matter was resolved and after instructions from our Hike Coordinator, we gathered for our group photo at the start...there are 19 "hikers hiking" today including myself, Frank L, Armin (new hiker, welcome!), Barbara, Muris, Steve R, Brian, Ivan, Annette, Faryde, Renu, Diane, Doug, Ron B, Marleen, Lesley (H.C), Rita, Andrea, and Frank...
Well, as is often the case, there is the start (where we parked) and the actual start on the main trail, which today was accessed by a short walk from the conservation area over to Appleby Line and the B.T.C sign marking the end of the Iroquoia Section and the beginning of the Toronto Section...the cacophonous sound of the nearby 401 highway provides a discordant auditory backdrop...
We seek refuge from the urban transportation mayhem in the quite pretty forest, the trail ultimately leads us back across Campbellville Road and right by a very historic spot where the first blaze was painted many years ago...
There's one more road to traverse and that's it for the rest of the day...with Kelso in the background, Sir Hike-a-Lot finds that "gap" in the traffic and is seen crossing Sixth Line...like a "lord a-leaping" should...
There's another noisy, dusty reminder of why I would describe this hike as a "near urban" experience as we cross over the Dufferin Quarry bridge and view the destruction that feeds the construction "progress" of the GTA...
We meander along the escarpment edge and are treated to some pretty views including this one of Greystone Golf Club...
After a short refreshment break and our departure from the Wilfred G. Crozier Nature Reserve, there are just a few kilometers left to travel on what has turned out to be a quite pleasant morning...
As our destination is reached, we are treated to the sight of a beautiful blue heron at the pond near Pear Tree Park...hey, it's no partridge, but just as magical and gives today's hike a "five golden ring" rating as far as I'm concerned...Thanks for letting us share our day with you and see you up in Sydenham next week where we anticipate another very special occasion!
We encountered this grizzled, heavily accented Englishman through hiking just as we arrived at Pear Tree in the morning...a real world traveler enjoying what the Bruce Trail has to offer!
