Dufferin Hi-land Section - Rock Hill ( 28.3km) to Prince of Wales (40.7 km) - August 21,2025.
This week HWF was hiking the Dufferin Section from Rock Hill 28.3 km to Prince of Wales 40.7 km for a 12.4 km hike.
We had 18 enthusiastic hikers this week FrankL, Donna, SteveR, Doug, Grace, Renu, Faryde, Annette, Georgia, Josie, Frank, Rita, Diane, Lesley, Marleen, Ivan, Barbara (HC), and Andrew.
The weather was perfect for hiking, starting out coolish at 17deg C and climbing to 24 deg C before the hike was over. After the heat of the past few weeks we welcomed a lovely breeze and the cool air of the forest to keep everyone comfortable.
The trail meanders through the cedar forest of Rock Hill Center with interesting rock features and crevices.
Interesting Fact!
Rock Hill was famous for monster rock concerts held here in the 1960's and 70's. Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, The
Guess Who, Chilliwack and many other rock, pop and country acts from
across Canada and the world played here.
A bit of a road walk takes us past Whitfield Church, which looks a little sleepy now. Once known as Beechnut Corners the area was settled in 1851 by early pioneers.
We passby the abandoned power plant on the banks of the Pine River. This was
the site of the Pine River Light and Power Company from 1908 to 1914.
Interesting fact!
This was one of the early private electricity
generators in Ontario, serving Shelburne and
Orangeville. The scheme was bankrupted by
competition from Ontario Hydro.
A stop for clothing adjustments and hydration and for a group chatter!
The perfect spot for 11's at the Pine River Fishing Area. Sunshine and a beach!

The benefit of country road walking, we can walk 4 abreast and carry on a group conversation.
Finally, after a lengthy road walk the cars are in sight and another great hike completed in the Dufferin Section.
